CELEBRATING CHILDREN'S BOOKS
Melanin Child Stories
Melanin Child Stories is an inclusive bookshop specialised in children's and adult books that are underrepresented in this society. MCS exists ,aims to support diverse authors. Our journey started through a pop-up shop hosted by SASBS Events, who were willing to support Small Business. Thanks to the amazing response and encouragement from the community, Melanin Child Stories kept on growing.
We wouldn't exist without the support of passionate people and readers!

Diversity of UK’s population is not reflected in school library books
The 7th annual Reflecting Realities Survey of Ethnic Representation within UK Children’s Literature, funded by the Arts Council England, shows that 17% of children’s books published in 2023 feature a racially minoritised character.
While this demonstrates a significant increase from the 4% first reported in 2017, it is the first year that the survey has shown an annual decrease, down from 30% in 2022. This decrease is also echoed in the percentage of racially minoritised main characters, down 7 percentage points from 14% in 2022 to 7% in 2023.

What Schools Say About Us

“I have been a customer of Melanin Child Stories for about 2 years and Suzy and her invaluable team have been reliable, friendly and very much focussed and in touch with the needs of our local school community. I have no hesitation in recommending this excellent book shop to anyone who is looking for an efficient and speedy service.” Eleanor Palmer Primary School, Camden.
“Suzy and her staff offer an excellent service, from recommendations to prompt delivery, and excellent value for money. The team are consistently friendly and helpful.” Willow Brook Primary School Academic.

I choose to use Melanin Child Stories because they understand that education is more than this. Their involvement and dedication to getting pupils and students to read is first rate and if more retailers did this then my job would be easier in many ways. A business like Melanin Child Stories allows you to deal with real people who share a love of books and learning. They know what you want and the ins and outs of your job and they fit in with your constraints. You can rely on them every time.” St Josephs Junior School, Leyton, London.
